I want to explain something here. These two .gifs are the first flash animations that I had ever made. I did these during my first semester in college in a computer animation class back in 2010. I had no idea what Flash even was.

Now let me just ask you something: Which one looks like it took the most time?

Our assignment was to experiment with Flash on our own, get used to the tools and settings and that sort of thing. I decided to go frame by frame and observed a gif taken from Treasure Planet. The result was that first gif you see up there.

I turned that first gif in to class the next day…and got a failing grade.

“This is not the proper way to use Flash” my teacher said. “Too complicated. This is not what people want to see. No use of tweens. Zero points.”

I was heartbroken to get a zero on my first assignment, so my teacher decided to give me a second chance. “Animate a running stick figure with tweens” the teacher said. So I did. I turned in that 2nd gif you see, and got an A.

To this day I am appalled by the way I was treated. To all of you animators out there, I recommend learning on your own. It could save you time and money. If you still choose to go to college, then that is fine too. You do what you want, just don’t let ANYONE try to downgrade your creative capability.

Okay just reblogging this because I’m seeing all these responses from students who didn’t follow their teachers instructions for their assignments and then got poor grade, and seem to think it was because their teacher was some sort of an ass or something.

I’m sorry no. You didn’t do what they asked, you didn’t follow the assignment, you got an F.

Yes it sucks that you put a lot of work into tracing that gif, but that wasn’t what you’re teacher asked you to do.

And I’m sorry but your teacher’s right. If you’re trying to get a job for flash animation, damn straight a company is going to want to see that you know how to use the program and it’s tools. That means understanding how to use the specific animation tools in flash, like tweening. That doesn’t automatically mean making shitty stiff animation. If you really want to amaze you’re teacher, make amazing animation while fallowing his assignment.

From the sounds of it the teacher wanted to see you practice and experiment with tweens, and you didn’t, so you didn’t get points. That’s it. That’s literately all that has happened here. There is no personal assault on you or creativity as a whole. The fact you think that getting an F for handing in a traced copy written animation means he’s trying to stomp out creativity is… kind of telling in of itself.

Also you’re incredibly lucky you didn’t get a warning for handing in that copy written trace. If I had done that in my school I would have gotten in deep shit. I would be happy he let you re-do the assignment and then move on and continue to do creative stuff on your own time. You’re teacher is there to teach you how to use the program, not to personally support or ”downgrade your creative capability.”

Tell ‘em like it is, Chronidu. I do not think OP is being truthful, in the fact that it is fairly obvious they’re not sharing the whole truth, ferreting away important key parts like, oh idk.. the fact that they were supposed to be LEARNING FLASH and not LEARNING TO TRACE GIFS.

This comparison is apples to oranges, and depending on the lighting. That second animation is crap if you’re trying to think of it as remotely comparable to even the copied skill of a disney animator, its true! If someone were to be grading it based on animation quality, it would certainly fail. However it is composed entirely of tweens, and if you’re grading if the person understands how to use tweens, then of course it is A material. Congrats! Gif #2 conveyed that you understood the material being taught and so it got you a passing grade! I agree that you should be thankful you even got a second go.

Art school has a technical side and is not devoted entirely to “make this picture look super pretty with methods you already know.” Your assignment was a technical one, not an artistic one. Why would you expect anything BUT an F when you did the exact opposite of what you were supposed to do?

Art school is as much about building experience and connections as it is about learning skills. You can technically learn anything you want on your own, but you will have 0 credibility and you will be flying blind in to an industry that you absolutely do not understand. Art schools don’t just teach you how to be a better artist, but a better worker. Good work habits, team cooperation, understanding what employers want, and making sure you have the technical skills you need because SURPRISE, raw talent won’t get you by.

Please don’t give the toxic advice of “fuck schools do it on your own!” What if your foolish ass actually IMPRESSES upon someone?? You’d be costing them an actual opportunity by whining about your ego getting chipped at 3 years ago. People could learn to be an incredible animator on your own, but if they don’t have the developed work habits to fit in to a studio environment, nobody is going to want them in their studio. If they even give you the time of day! After all, you’re not really going to have anyone to speak for you that is mildly relevant to your interests, or even know the people who let word out that there is a job opening to apply for.

Ways to be successful in art school:

Make sure you actually do the assignment when you do the assignment.

Pay attention to the details of what is wanted from you. This isn’t artwork for you, after all! It is artwork for your education!

Time spent means nothing when it comes to turned in assignments, only outcome and how it compares (and preferably exceeds) with what was asked of it.

Check your ego at the door, because if you’re so attached to your work that you’ll let something like this fester for 3 years, it is going to get very battered and bruised (and you are not going to thrive in a professional environment, so best learn now.)

Remember you are there to learn how to be a Professional Artist. Not a better artist.

Ways to do terribly in art school:

Think time spent should mean anything for your eventual grade.

Ignore the assignment and just make something that you like to turn in.

Hold on to failed assignments like battle wounds and thinking you must have been treated terrible instead of learning from it and moving on.

Expect that any amount of request or constraint on the technical side of how you produce a piece means the end of creativity in said piece.

Treat artwork you make for school like personal projects and not demonstrations of learned skill.

Think that because you were “being creative” you are infallible

There you go guys now you ACTUALLY learned something today.

I may be self-taught but even I know the benefits of attending an art school. I wish I could have had the opportunity to do so when I was younger, but that’s a whole other story

Oscar was adopted as a kitten from an animal shelter and grew up in the third-floor end-stage dementia unit at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The 41-bed unit treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses, most of whom are in the end stage of life and are generally unaware of their surroundings. Oscar was one of six cats adopted by Steere House, which bills itself as a “pet friendly” facility.

After about six months, the staff noticed that Oscar, just like the doctors and nurses, would make his own rounds. Oscar would sniff and observe patients, then curl up to sleep with certain ones. The patients he would sleep with often died within several hours of his arrival. One of the first cases involved a patient who had a blood clot in her leg that was ice cold at the time. Oscar wrapped his body around her leg and stayed until the woman died.In another instance, the doctor had made a determination of impending death based on the patient’s condition, while Oscar simply walked away, causing the doctor to believe that Oscar’s streak (12 at the time) had ended. However, it would be later discovered that the doctor’s prognosis was simply 10 hours too early: Oscar later visited the patient, who died two hours later.

Oscar’s accuracy led the staff to institute a new and unusual protocol: once he is discovered sleeping with a patient, staff will call family members to notify them of the patient’s (expected) impending death.

Most of the time the patient’s family has no issue with Oscar being present at the time of death. On those occasions when he is removed from the room at the family’s request, he is known to pace back and forth in front of the door and meow in protest. When present, Oscar will stay by the patient until they die, then after death will quietly leave the room.

i find this very interesting as this behavior seems common in many cats that reside in mental and nursing homes. Often sharing the bed of the soon to be deceased. In the ancient world cats were revered by many cultures, most famously Ancient Egypt, as guardians of the underworld, keepers of the gate of death, and sometimes even harbingers of death itself. This makes me wonder whether this behavior was observed during ancient times as well and perhaps prompted this belief and many practices surrounding it.

CREAMY

Creamy Spinach Soup
Put 1 chopped onion, 2 peeled garlic cloves, 3 cups water and salt and pepper in a pot over high heat. Boil, cover, lower the heat and simmer until the onion is tender, about 10 minutes. Add 10 ounces chopped spinach and 1/2 cup parsley leaves; cook until the spinach is tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup Greek-style yogurt and purée. Garnish: A spoonful of Greek-style yogurt and chopped parsley.

Squash-and-Ginger Soup
Substitute 1 tablespoon minced ginger for the garlic and 4 cups chopped butternut squash for the spinach (it will take longer to soften). Skip the parsley and substitute half-and-half or cream for the yogurt. Garnish: A spoonful of cream.

Curried Cauliflower Soup
Substitute 1 tablespoon minced ginger for the garlic, 2 cups cauliflower florets for the spinach (they will take longer to soften), 1 tablespoon curry powder for the parsley and coconut milk for the yogurt. Garnish: Chopped cilantro.

BROTHY

Vegetable Broth With Toast
Put 2 chopped carrots, 2 chopped onions, 1 small chopped potato, 2 chopped celery ribs, 2 garlic cloves, 10 sliced mushrooms, 1 cup chopped tomatoes (canned are fine), 10 parsley sprigs, 1/2 ounce dried porcini, 8 cups water and salt and pepper in a pot over high heat. Boil, lower heat and simmer until the vegetables are soft, 30 minutes or longer. Strain and serve over toasted good bread. Garnish: Chopped celery leaves.

Egg Drop Soup
Beat 4 eggs. Boil the strained stock, lower the heat so it simmers and add the eggs in a steady stream, stirring constantly until they’re cooked, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup chopped scallions, 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon sesame oil. Skip the bread. Garnish: Chopped scallions.

Rice-and-Pea Soup
Boil the strained stock, lower the heat so it simmers and add 3/4 cup white rice. Cook until tender, then add 2 cups fresh or frozen peas; cook for a minute or two. Skip the bread. Garnish: Grated Parmesan

EARTHY

Bean Soup
Put 1 1/2 cup dried beans, 1 chopped onion, 2 chopped carrots, 2 chopped celery ribs, 2 bay leaves, 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves and 6 cups water in a pot over high heat. Boil, lower the heat, cover and simmer until the beans are soft, at least 1 hour, adding more water if necessary. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish: A drizzle of olive oil.

Chickpea-and-Pasta Soup
Substitute chickpeas for the beans and rosemary for the thyme and add 1 cup chopped tomatoes (canned are fine). When the chickpeas are almost tender, add 1/2 cup small pasta. Cook until the pasta and chickpeas are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Garnish: A few chopped rosemary leaves.

Spicy Black-Bean Soup
Use black beans and substitute fresh oregano for the thyme. When the beans are done, add 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 dried or canned chipotle and the juice of a lime. Garnish: Cilantro and sour cream.

HEARTY

Minestrone
Sauté 1 chopped onion, 1 chopped carrot, 1 chopped celery rib and 1 teaspoon minced garlic in 3 tablespoons olive oil for 5 minutes. Add 2 cups cubed potatoes and salt and pepper; cook for 2 minutes. Add 1 cup chopped tomatoes (canned are fine) and 5 cups water. Boil, lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add 1 cup chopped green beans; simmer for 20 minutes. Garnish: Chopped parsley and grated Parmesan.

Mushroom Soup
Substitute 1 1/2 pounds sliced mushrooms (preferably an assortment) for the potatoes; sauté until they brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Substitute ½ cup white wine for the tomatoes, skip the green beans and add a fresh thyme sprig with the water. Garnish: A few thyme leaves.

Tomato-and-Garlic Soup
Use 2 tablespoons minced garlic and substitute 2 tablespoons tomato paste for the celery. Skip the potatoes and green beans; use 3 cups tomatoes and 3 cups water. Cook the tomatoes for 10 to 15 minutes. Garnish: Lots of chopped or torn basil

Notes:

All of these recipes serve four, and you’ll want about a 2.5-to-4-quart (medium or large) pot. Most can be cooked for a while — but not so long that the freshness is gone. Most will taste as good or better the next day, so consider making a double batch and refrigerating (or freezing) the leftovers. But never boil a soup after you’ve added dairy to it; instead, reheat gently.

If you want a supersmooth soup (and just about any of these soups can be puréed if you like), use a standing blender — let the soup cool a bit first — which creates a finer purée than an immersion blender does; you might even strain the soup after puréeing it.

Garnishes are all optional, though herbs add a dimension that will be lacking otherwise. If you taste as you’re cooking, you’ll be fine, because there is really nothing to go wrong here.

I found a new cure for my art blocks: sketches combining Homestuck and mythology, the former being easy for me to draw, the latter being my obsession since I was in kindergarten. Thinking about the ways mythology could evolve if the beta trolls became gods and how would the beliefs influence them is relaxing.

So I sketched out some ideas how might statues of the troll gods in temples look like. No deep reasoning, just what I felt like.

Is your character moral? This is a very complicated question. First of all, what is “moral”?

Moral (n): focused on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom.

Okay, so moral characters are concerned with right-mindedness; they care about doing the right thing. Right? Notice that, by the definition, morality supersedes legality and customs, which are constraints imposed on people by society. These constraints may be immoral like the military draft which forces people into a situation where they may have to kill another person (killing is pretty much immoral, folks) or the common custom of the “little white lie”. And because these constraints may be immoral, a moral character may, on occasion (or all the time), ignore them.

What are the principles of moral behavior? How can you tell, basically, if a character is moral?

“If you ask anyone, ‘What is morality based on?’ these are the two factors that always come out: One is Reciprocity, and associated with it is a sense of justice and a sense of fairness, and the other one is Empathy and compassion. Human morality is more than this, but if you would remove these two pillars, there would be not much remaining, I think, and so they are absolutely essential.” - Frans de Waal

What do Reciprocity and Empathy mean?

Reciprocity (n): responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind action

Empathy (n): the ability to understand and share the feelings of another

If your character is moral, he or she will almost certainly have a sense of fairness and compassion. Both of these are considered part of the Seven High Virtues, with Empathy commonly referred to as “Love” or “Charity”, and Reciprocity most often called “Justice”. Very moral characters will, most likely, have either Love, Charity, or Justice as their peak virtue.

Moral characters are often good listeners. They care for other people, and they want to do right by them. They are willing to take action to create positive outcomes for others. They have little to no concern for themselves.

Don’t get us wrong, morality is a sliding scale. Many heroic characters are basically moral, though they may sometimes kill, lie, steal, or cheat depending on what life-threatening or otherwise difficult situation has arisen. But if you’re looking for straight-up a moral character, the most common indicator will always be cooperation.

Does your character play well with others?

Morality arises from the need for cooperation, and the understanding of cooperation as essential to human interaction. There is no need to be moral if you are, for example, the last human on Earth. Who is there to be moral with or to? Therefore, moral characters desire to interact with others in a positive way. Immoral characters don’t care about offending or harming others, so they are cool with interacting in a negative way.

Moral heroic characters are often great leaders because they are good at cooperating. Immoral heroic characters are often loners because they are awful at cooperating.

Alright, so if your character moral, they will (most likely):

Ignore legalities or customs that they view as immoral

Have a strong sense of justice and compassion

Cooperate well with other characters

It is worth noting that morality is different for different people in different places at different times in history. Generally, there are universal ideas of morality instilled within us from infancy (these are cooperation, justice, compassion, a sense of “rightness” and “wrongness”, etc). Deciding what you, as a writer, think of as “moral” is fundamental in determining the morality of the character in question. We can’t tell you what moral is for you in your story or for yourself, but once you decide that, you will be able to define your character’s morality.

If you are very interested in determining the morality of your character, you can take this quiz for yourself and/or for your character to help you decide. Be warned that some of the questions may not be truly applicable to your characters (for instance, whether or not stem cell research is wrong may not be an issue in your world because there is no stem cell research), but do your best to answer for your character in those situations.
